Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about Moth+Flame and the training we build.
What is Moth+Flame?
Moth+Flame is a New York company, founded in 2015, that builds virtual reality training and readiness analytics. It has trained more than 65,000 people, including more than 45,000 warfighters across the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and SOCOM, as well as government agencies and businesses. Trainees practice real skills in VR, often by speaking out loud with filmed actors, and leaders get reports on performance and readiness.
What kinds of training does Moth+Flame offer?
More than 200 ready-made VR training modules, plus custom training, in suicide prevention; sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR); leadership, including CommandAI training on safe AI use; aircraft maintenance; shipyard trades; pilot training; counter-drone and electronic warfare; operations, including MK-19 weapon familiarization and tactical combat casualty care; healthcare communication; language immersion; and Total Sailor resilience training. Most training runs both in VR and in a web browser.
Does Moth+Flame provide suicide prevention training for the military?
Yes. The training is built on the Ask, Care, Escort (ACE) model. Trainees are coached first, then use their own voice to practice intervention conversations in realistic crisis scenarios: a junior enlisted service member, a senior leader, an operator, a spouse, and safe messaging after a suicide death. It is backed by DoD-funded research and IRB-approved studies, including a Florida State research study. Moth+Flame has trained more than 20,000 people in suicide prevention.
Does Moth+Flame offer sexual assault prevention and response (SAPR) training?
Yes. SAPR modules include Bystander Intervention (the “3 Ds”: Direct, Delegate, Distract), Active Intervention, First Interview (supporting a victim who has reported an assault) and Restricted vs. Unrestricted reporting. Foundational Skills modules cover consent, refusal skills and setting boundaries.
Does Moth+Flame make VR training for aircraft maintenance?
Yes. Maintainers practice real procedures without taking aircraft off the flight line: engine start, run and shutdown; flight control rigging; flight control surface removal; towing; radio use; and egress. Modules cover the C-130H, C-130J, C-17A, C-5M, F-15C, F-15E, E-8, MC-12 and C-295. A U.S. Air Force business case analysis found a 300% increase in training output.
Does Moth+Flame offer VR pilot training?
Yes. Moth+Flame VR Flight Sim gives pilots portable, aircraft-specific training, with modules for F-16 and T-38 basic fighter maneuvers, the AH-64, MQ-9 emergency procedures and tactics, and MC-12 mission rehearsal. Every maneuver is scored, instructors can run the scenario from a browser, and it works offline and in classified environments.
Does Moth+Flame have drone or counter-drone training?
Yes. The Counter UAS module teaches trainees to detect and report drones, estimate their position using hand gestures to measure angles, and report using the SALUTE method. For drone pilots, MQ-9 modules cover emergency procedures and tactics, techniques and procedures, taught by experienced instructors in 360° video.
Does Moth+Flame make VR training for shipbuilding and shipyard workers?
Yes. Moth+Flame provides VR trades and maintenance training for shipyard workers, such as pipefitting and welding, built on its maintenance training platform. Training specific to a shipyard is generated with AI from that yard's own material, so new content is fast to build: a pipefitting module was built in about a day.
Does Moth+Flame offer electronic warfare or space operations training?
Yes. Drone and electronic warfare countermeasures change every few weeks, so Moth+Flame builds VR scenarios for counter-drone and electronic warfare tasks with AI assistance, and new threats can be added quickly. Content is delivered securely from AWS GovCloud and can run offline. For Space Force electronic warfare squadrons, Moth+Flame offers an unclassified rehearsal environment where each operator runs a scenario and is assessed individually, with tiered progression.
Does Moth+Flame offer training on safe AI use, OPSEC and cybersecurity?
Yes. CommandAI, Moth+Flame's newest leadership offering, puts trainees in a simulated workday with an AI assistant. While they do a real work task, it assesses what information they give the AI, whether they check its output, and who owns the final decision. Annual cyber awareness courses test what people know; CommandAI shows what they actually do with sensitive data under deadline pressure.
Does Moth+Flame offer leadership training?
Yes. Leaders practice hard conversations by speaking naturally in VR: giving feedback, managing conflict, checking in on a struggling direct report, leading through change, and explaining how bringing AI into the workplace will affect an employee. Every attempt is scored against an assessment framework that fits the organization, so leaders and schools can track progress over a course or a career. It works on a VR headset, in a browser or on mobile.
How does Moth+Flame use AI?
In four ways. Trainees speak naturally and the system understands them, so there is no multiple choice. Training teams can create new VR scenarios from plain-language prompts, which is how new maintenance, shipyard and counter-drone content gets built quickly. CommandAI trains people to use AI tools safely. And CommandIQ, Moth+Flame’s analytics platform, uses AI to analyze how trainees behave, with every assessment checked by human reviewers.
How does Moth+Flame measure training results and readiness?
Every session records what trainees decide and say and how they perform under pressure. Leaders see reports at the individual, cohort, unit and organization level, including maps that show which groups are performing well and which need support. CommandIQ turns this data into evidence of proficiency and links it back to training priorities.
What equipment does Moth+Flame training need?
Moth+Flame works across hardware: VR headsets, a web browser on desktop, and mobile. Headsets arrive pre-configured. Training works offline with no Wi-Fi, is SCIF compatible with Varjo Secure, can be hosted on AWS GovCloud, and connects to existing learning management systems (LMS) through integrations and an API.
Can Moth+Flame build custom training?
Yes. The Moth+Flame studio films and renders custom VR content for any skill. Teams can also write their own scenarios with AI-assisted authoring, or adapt ready-made library scenarios by changing the learning objectives, language and response options.
How can a government agency buy Moth+Flame?
Moth+Flame is available through SBIR Phase III, GSA IDIQ and DLA TLS, and is eligible for SBIR Phase III sole-source awards. Headquarters can license the platform while individual units license the content and headsets they need.
Who has used Moth+Flame?
Published case studies cover the Department of Defense’s fight against service member suicide, the U.S. Air Force meeting demand for MQ-9 pilots, maintainers at Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex (ALC), and Accenture helping government agencies hire more efficiently with realistic job previews.
